What is an LS engine swap?
An LS swap replaces your vehicle's factory engine with a GM LS-series V8 — LS1, LS2, LS3, LQ4, LQ9, LSA, LSX and the truck 4.8/5.3/6.0/6.2. They're compact, lightweight, reliable, and the aftermarket support is unmatched. That's why they end up in everything from 1957 Chevys and Foxbody Mustangs to Silverados, Miatas and even diesel trucks.
How much does an LS engine swap cost?
The honest answer: it depends on the chassis and what condition it's in. Here's what we quote at the shop:
- $6,000 – $10,000 — Junkyard 5.3L or 6.0L truck engine into a common chassis (C10, S10, Miata, Foxbody). Used engine, stock accessories, basic tune.
- $12,000 – $18,000 — Clean used LS3 or 6.0L LQ9 with a rebuilt 4L60E/4L80E, new wiring harness, headers, custom fuel and cooling, dyno tune.
- $20,000 – $30,000+ — LS3 crate engine, T56 or 6L80E, full electronics conversion, upgraded cooling, upgraded rear end, cage or subframe work.
- $30,000+ — Forced induction (turbo or supercharger), built shortblock, aftermarket ECU, race-ready fuel system.
Most swaps get more expensive because of what has to come along with the engine — transmission, driveshaft, fuel system, cooling, wiring, ECM tuning and (in older cars) suspension and brakes to handle the new power. Cutting corners on any of those is how "cheap" LS swaps end up back on the lift.
Why the LS is the swap of choice
- Power per dollar. A used 6.0L makes 360+ crank HP for the price of a set of iron heads.
- Compact package. LS engines are physically smaller than the small-block Chevys they replaced.
- Endless aftermarket. Cams, springs, headers, oil pans, accessory drives, harnesses — off-the-shelf for almost every chassis.
- Tunable. A good tuner (that's us) can wring another 30–60 HP out of a stock LS with a cam and tune alone.
What's involved in a professional LS swap
- Planning. Engine, transmission, and driveline decisions before anything is ordered.
- Mounts & fitment. Chassis-specific engine and transmission mounts, oil pan clearance, steering shaft clearance.
- Fuel system. Returnless or return-style, in-tank pump upgrade, correct injector sizing.
- Cooling. Aluminum radiator, electric fans, correct thermostat and steam vent lines.
- Wiring. Standalone or reworked factory harness, fused, sleeved and labeled.
- ECM tuning. VATS/anti-theft removed, DOD/MDS disabled, fuel and spark tables dialed on the dyno.
- Shake-down. Leak-down, road-test, re-torque, final tune.
Should you do it yourself?
If you have the space, the tools and time, a driveway LS swap is doable — and rewarding. The two places DIY swaps go sideways are wiring and tuning. Both are worth handing to a shop even if you build the rest yourself.
